Leather Workers Head to Russia, Sparking Concerns in Kanpur
Workers from Delhi and Punjab are migrating to Russia to take up jobs in the leather industry. This movement has raised alarms among leather traders and exporters in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. They fear a severe labor shortage could disrupt local operations.
Exporters feel India should not just supply manpower to Russia but should encourage joint ventures with Russian companies. Asad Iraqi, the regional head of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), expressed concerns about existing pressures from US tariffs on their trade. Recent discussions with Russian officials aimed to establish a joint venture program, which Iraqi insists is crucial for keeping Indian workers at home.
During a meeting of the Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers Association (IFCOMA), former CLE Chairman Mukhtarul Amin noted the desire to expand business ties with new countries instead of merely facing US tariffs. There’s growing interest from Russia in Indian leather products, which can be seen as an opportunity.
On the historical front, about 20-25 years ago, India and Russia had a thriving leather trade. RK Jalan, the current CLE Chairman, emphasized the need to revitalize this business relationship. He aims to bring this matter to the attention of the Indian government.
Recent data suggests that this trend of worker migration is not isolated. In a survey by the International Labor Organization, nearly 17% of workers in certain sectors looked for jobs abroad in 2022. This raises questions about labor market stability at home.
The diverse opinions among traders indicate a mix of concern and cautious optimism. While the local market faces challenges, the potential for international partnerships could pave the way for new opportunities.
