New Delhi: A startup in Odisha, Coratia Technologies, has just secured a ₹66 crore deal with the Indian Navy. This contract involves creating two advanced underwater robots, named Jalasimha and Jaladuta, along with a third vehicle, Navya (ASV). These vehicles will utilize AI and machine learning for sonar-based mapping and real-time data analysis, benefiting both defense and civil sectors.
Debendra Pradhan, co-founder and CEO of Coratia Technologies, highlighted how this victory showcases their ability to develop crucial underwater systems. He also emphasized the Navy’s commitment to enhance India’s research and innovation landscape through initiatives like the iDEX program.
Coratia Technologies plans to supply and maintain these Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (UWROVs). Their innovative designs promise advanced functionalities at much lower costs. This marks a significant breakthrough in India’s push for cost-effective underwater robotics.
Co-founder and CTO Biswajit Swain noted that introducing these indigenous UWROVs will reduce expenses and lessen dependence on foreign suppliers, especially in light of trade restrictions and tariff challenges. Their aim is to support India’s defense readiness and foster activities related to the blue economy.
In July, Coratia Technologies raised ₹17.4 crore in pre-Series A funding led by MGF Kavachh and Pontaq Ventures India. This financial boost will help them advance research and development, intellectual property rights, and international exports to meet the growing global demand for underwater robotics.
Current market trends show that the underwater robotics sector is expected to grow from USD 5.08 billion in 2025 to USD 9.53 billion by 2030, according to Mordor Intelligence. As Raj Sethia, founder of MGF Kavachh, stated, investing in Coratia not only supports a promising startup but aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, reinforcing the aspiration to be a global tech leader.
Coratia’s UWROVs are already being utilized across various sectors for tasks such as inspecting dams and bridges, mapping ocean floors, monitoring marine ecosystems, and checking offshore energy assets and pipelines. This growing reliance on homegrown technology illustrates a shift towards self-reliance in critical sectors.
