Indian Navy Welcomes ‘Sanshodhak’: Enhancing Maritime Mapping and Strategic Defense Capabilities

The Indian Navy has recently welcomed its fourth and final survey vessel, ‘Sanshodhak,’ enhancing India’s maritime capabilities. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, this delivery showcases India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The Survey Vessel (Large) program started in 2018, leading to a fleet designed for critical tasks. These include:

  • Conducting coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys
  • Mapping ports and identifying safe navigation routes
  • Gathering oceanographic data

These activities are essential for ensuring safe passage for both commercial and naval vessels.

Sanshodhak comes equipped with advanced technologies like Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Digital Side Scan Sonar, enabling precise seabed mapping. With a displacement of around 3,400 tons and a speed of over 18 knots, she promises robust performance in various missions.

This vessel’s construction is noteworthy, as over 80% of its components are sourced from Indian suppliers. This collaboration strengthens the domestic defense industry and creates job opportunities, reflecting the growing capabilities of India’s manufacturing sector.

Hydrographic vessels like Sanshodhak play a vital role in the Indian Ocean Region, enhancing maritime awareness and supporting naval missions. They also contribute to broader blue economy initiatives, important for economic growth.

The delivery aligns with the government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, aiming for a self-reliant defense sector. As India continues to upgrade its naval fleet, the role of these survey vessels will be crucial in shaping maritime security and supporting trade.

Recent statistics show that maritime trade continues to grow, emphasizing the need for enhanced maritime infrastructure. As the Indian Navy increases its capabilities, it is well-positioned to support both national security and economic interests in the region.
