Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that India would stop buying oil from Russia. However, Indian officials quickly refuted that statement. They confirmed that no official order was given to reduce Russian oil imports.
In fact, India has become one of Russia’s biggest oil buyers. This relationship has helped Russia maintain its export revenues while India benefits from lower energy prices. From January to June this year, India imported about 1.75 million barrels of Russian crude per day, marking a 1% increase from the previous year.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that their energy decisions rely on global prices and conditions. Despite Trump’s criticisms of India’s energy ties with Russia, officials explained that moving away from such long-term contracts is complicated. One source noted, “It is not so simple to just stop buying overnight.”
Trump has often pointed to India’s trade deficit and reliance on Russian military equipment. However, some experts argue that buying Russian oil helps stabilize global prices amidst Western restrictions on Russia.
Interestingly, while India continues to import Russian oil, some state refiners have recently paused their purchases. This pause is largely due to discounts on Russian oil dropping to their lowest levels since 2022. The need for competitive pricing has made firms like Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum cautious over recent weeks.
As of now, Russian oil accounts for around 35% of India’s total imports. This dependency is significant, especially as geopolitical tensions persist. Historical context shows that India has consistently relied on Russian energy, a trend that has been amplified by current global dynamics.
