An alleged shooter, identified as Sajid Akram from Hyderabad, was killed by police during the incident, which claimed the lives of fifteen people. Sajid Akram, 50, held a degree in commerce and moved to Australia in 1998. He married a woman of European descent and had two children. Akram often returned to India for family matters but did not come back when his father passed away.
Police reports indicate that Akram’s family was unaware of any radical views he may have held. They stated that there seemed to be no links between his radicalization and his life in India. A police spokesperson mentioned, “Family members have expressed no knowledge of his radical mindset or activities.” This raises questions about how such a mindset developed without any warning signs.
When reporters visited Akram’s family home in Hyderabad, neighbors described the area as peaceful, emphasizing that they had never seen any unusual behavior from the family. One neighbor mentioned, “We heard he is a doctor,” referring to Akram’s brother, who lives there with their elderly mother.
Adding complexity to the investigation, Akram and his son, Naveed, 24, had traveled to the Philippines a month before the attack. Their visit has sparked scrutiny, as authorities work to determine if it had any implications related to the act of violence. However, officials have not found any definitive connections to terrorist organizations.
Recent studies indicate that radicalization often stems from a combination of personal grievances, social isolation, and exposure to extremist ideologies. A 2021 report by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue found that many individuals radicalized in the West had little to no prior criminal history, similar to Akram’s case.
