Indian Railways (IR) is putting passenger safety first and has made huge strides in manufacturing modern LHB coaches. From April to November 2025, they produced over 4,224 LHB coaches. This is part of a remarkable trend; since 2014, IR has manufactured more than 42,600 LHB coaches. In contrast, just 2,300 coaches were made between 2004 and 2014, highlighting an 18-fold increase.
A senior railway official explained, “This growth shows our commitment to upgrading our trains. LHB coaches are designed for better safety and require less maintenance.”
The production is impressive across multiple factories. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai led the way with 1,659 coaches, followed by the Modern Coach Factory in Raebareli, which produced 1,234, and the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala with 1,331 coaches.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is actively overseeing this progress. The LHB coaches are built using advanced German technology, ensuring they perform well even during accidents. This focus on local manufacturing aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, aiming to reduce reliance on imports while improving domestic capabilities.
Beyond coach production, Indian Railways is also making significant advancements in electrification. As of now, over 99% of the broad-gauge network is electrified. From 2019 to 2025, more than 33,000 route kilometers were electrified, averaging over 15 kilometers a day. This effort is comparable to the entire railway network of Germany.
In today’s context, as climate change becomes a pressing concern, this move toward electrified rail systems is crucial. Eco-friendly rail travel could play a big role in reducing carbon emissions.
