Indian Railways Hits IRCTC with ₹10 Lakh Fine Over Vande Bharat Express Food Complaint: Vendor Penalized ₹50 Lakh and Contract Terminated!

Recently, Indian Railways took a strong stand after a passenger raised concerns about contaminated food on a Vande Bharat train. Following a complaint aboard the Patna-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express on March 15, the Railway Ministry fined IRCTC ₹10 lakh for hygiene issues.

Authorities quickly initiated an investigation. It didn’t take long before the complaint went viral, leading many on social media to demand accountability for the food quality. Railway officials emphasized that strict actions will be enforced, particularly for premium services like the Vande Bharat Express.

The complaint noted that the food served was not only unhealthy but also failed basic hygiene standards. Videos depicting the unsatisfactory meals further fueled public outrage, putting pressure on IRCTC, which handles food services across all trains.

Beyond just fining IRCTC, the Railways imposed an even heftier penalty on the vendor responsible for the food, amounting to ₹50 lakh, and terminated their contract. This decisive action aims to ensure that all parties involved are held accountable.

Despite these incidents, Indian Railways defended its overall food quality. Officials highlighted that they serve around 58 crore meals annually, with complaints making up only 0.0008% of total servings, which includes all types of grievances, from overcharging to hygiene issues. In the past three years, fines totaling ₹2.6 crore have been imposed on vendors tied to passenger complaints.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that more reforms are on the horizon as part of the “Reform Express,” aiming to enhance passenger experience. Officials reinforced that they would not tolerate any negligence toward passengers and that strict penalties would be enforced for any negligence by service providers.

This incident sends a clear message. Cleanliness and quality are non-negotiable when serving passengers, especially on trains known for their premium service. The Railways is committed to rectifying any issues that could compromise safety or quality, ensuring a better experience for travelers.

As passenger expectations grow, Indian Railways recognizes the importance of maintaining high standards. Each complaint is taken seriously, and the focus remains on improving services to meet the needs of travelers today.
