Indian Railways Invests ₹398 Crore in High-Speed OFC Backbone for Western Zone Modernization: What It Means for Travelers

New Delhi: Indian Railways is taking a big step forward in modernizing its communication systems. They’ve approved a project worth ₹398.36 crore to strengthen the optical fibre network in the Ahmedabad and Ratlam divisions of the Western Railway.

This upgrade is all about improving digital connectivity, safety, and the overall efficiency of train operations. It’s part of a national initiative to roll out advanced communication systems and will work alongside Kavach, India’s indigenous safety system designed to prevent train accidents.

What’s Included in the Project?

The plan will see a 4×48-core Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) backbone installed across 1,929 route kilometres—1,456 km in Ahmedabad and 473 km in Ratlam. This new network will significantly boost communication reliability and ensure seamless data transmission, crucial for modern signalling and train operations.

Why the Fibre Network is Important

This optical fibre backbone is vital for the digital transformation of Indian Railways. It enables high-speed communication critical for technologies like IoT-based monitoring and real-time train tracking. The dual-path connectivity, using both underground cables and overhead wires, ensures uninterrupted communication, even in case of system failures. There’s also potential for extra revenue by leasing spare fibre capacity to telecom companies.

Supporting the Kavach Safety System

A key goal of this project is to enhance the Kavach system. This automatic train protection tool prevents collisions by applying brakes if necessary actions are not taken by the train crew. The latest version, Kavach 4.0, features improved accuracy and better signal communication, and the new fibre backbone is crucial for its operation, facilitating real-time data exchange between trains, tracks, and control systems.

Wider Upgrades Underway

Notably, this project is part of a larger ₹1,236 crore initiative to upgrade various communication networks and expand Kavach across multiple railway zones. For example, the Central Railway is working on a dual-path fibre network for ₹623.63 crore, while the Southern Railway is deploying Kavach on key high-density routes.

Enhancing Passenger Experience

Indian Railways has also focused on improving passenger amenities, investing over ₹34,000 crore in three years. This includes better crowd management, AI surveillance, modern waiting areas, and upgraded station facilities, all aimed at making train travel safer and more comfortable.
