Indian Railways Launches 1,024 New Trains and Extends 907 in Just Five Years: A Comprehensive Overview

From January to November last year, Indian Railways transported an astonishing 693.25 crore passengers. By the end of FY25, this number reached 715 crore. To put that in perspective, that’s about 87% of the world’s population using trains in India.

The scale of Indian Railways is remarkable. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw recently noted that over the past five years, they introduced 1,024 new trains and increased services on existing routes to keep up with rising demand. Special trains have also been a big aspect of their operations. During festivals and vacations, they operated 74,800 special trains to accommodate extra travelers.

To meet the needs of passengers, especially those traveling in unreserved coaches, Indian Railways has ramped up its offerings. They’ve started manufacturing 17,000 non-AC sleeper coaches aimed at low and middle-income families. This is crucial since the demand for budget travel has surged. The number of people using general coaches has soared from just 99 crore in the pandemic year (2020-21) to 651 crore in 2024-25.

With around 89,000 coaches in total, about 30% are AC, while 70% are non-AC. The increase in special train services has been significant too. In 2022-23, Indian Railways ran about 40,500 special trains, but that number jumped to around 85,400 in 2024-25!

The Vande Bharat trains have also become a focal point of India’s rail development. Currently, there are 164 Vande Bharat trains in operation, and the government plans to expand this fleet to 800 by 2030 and 4,500 by 2047. This reflects the commitment to modernize and improve railway travel across the country.

Interestingly, user reactions on social media highlight both excitement and concern. While many applaud the modern trains and increased services, others question the need for more comfortable options and the rise in ticket prices. As Indian Railways continues to grow, these discussions will be vital in shaping its future.
