Indian Railways Shatters Records: 1,670 MT Freight Transported and 25,000 Daily Trains in 2026!

April 4, 2026, New Delhi: The Indian Railways has had a remarkable year, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In the financial year 2025-26, the rail system achieved record freight loading, reaching an impressive 1,670 million tonnes. This increase reflects the railways’ ability to transport essential goods like coal, cement, and food grains, ensuring that supply chains remain strong.

Minister Vaishnaw noted that the railways are not only focusing on freight but also enhancing passenger services. Around 25,000 trains operate daily, and special trains are added during busy times to better serve travelers. The expansion of the Vande Bharat services, including sleeper options, has significantly modernized long-distance travel.

In terms of safety, the railways have made noteworthy strides. The indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection System now covers over 3,100 route kilometers, with plans to extend it to an additional 24,400 kilometers. This initiative represents a major step toward safer rail travel for everyone.

On the digital front, the launch of the RailOne App in July 2025 allows users to easily book tickets and raise concerns, making the entire travel process more convenient. Recently, the railways removed over 3.04 crore suspicious user accounts to improve security and transparency.

Infrastructure development has also been a priority, with the establishment of 35 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals and the redevelopment of 119 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This growth is essential for strengthening the railways’ capabilities and providing better services to passengers.

<p Recent statistics from the Ministry of Railways highlight a growing trend among passengers, with train bookings increasing by 40% compared to the previous year. This surge suggests that more people are choosing rail travel, likely due to improved services and safety measures.

Overall, these developments indicate that Indian Railways is undergoing a transformative phase, enhancing not just its operational efficiency but also focusing on passenger comfort and safety. Whether for daily commuters or long-distance travelers, the year ahead looks promising for India’s railway network.
