At least one Indian seafarer is part of a crew involved in a recent maritime incident in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Mukesh Mangal, an official from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, two of the three commercial vessels attacked by Iranian forces contained 22 Indian crew members. Luckily, all seafarers on board are reported safe.
The Iranian military captured two vessels, Francesca and Epaminondas, and fired upon a third ship, Euphoria. These actions appear to be a response to the U.S. naval blockade affecting Iranian ports and the seizure of Iranian ships. While there are no Indians on the Francesca, one Indian seafarer is aboard the Epaminondas.
Notably, Epaminondas is a Panama-flagged container ship with a crew mainly from Ukraine and the Philippines. It was headed for India. Mangal confirmed the safety of the Indian seafarer, stating conversations with relevant authorities had assured them of his well-being.
A distinction exists regarding the vessels’ locations. Ships on the western side of the Strait are considered under Iranian control, while those on the eastern side have moved beyond the immediate conflict zone. He noted that understanding the positions of the vessels can clarify which crew members may be at risk.
Tehran’s justification for the seizures includes claims that the ships violated transit rules. While the British maritime security firm Vanguard Tech indicated that one vessel had prior clearance to pass, Iranian news sources allege it ignored warnings. This incident follows the recent capture of an Iranian vessel by the U.S., which led to accusations by the Revolutionary Guard of U.S. piracy.
