Indian Student Sentenced to 35 Months in Singapore: What Led to the Tragic Death of a Construction Worker?

A 22-year-old Indian student, Legha Pawan, has been sentenced to 35 months in prison for the death of a fellow Indian man, Jasbir Singh. The incident took place on June 30 last year, when both men were intoxicated near Clarke Quay, a popular spot in Singapore.

Legha pushed Singh into the river, a decision that led to tragedy. Jasbir, a 33-year-old construction worker and father of two, drowned after the push. It took rescue divers several hours to find his body. Legha fled the scene but was arrested the next morning.

In court, the prosecutor, Jheong Siew Yin, pointed out that Legha knew Singh was not in a good state and that his actions could easily lead to serious harm. She emphasized that he did not attempt to help Singh after the incident. Defense lawyers argued that Legha’s push was not meant to hurt, claiming it was a casual shove rather than a targeted attack.

This case highlights the serious consequences of reckless behavior while under the influence. According to the World Health Organization, alcohol-related incidents cause thousands of deaths globally each year. In the U.S., for example, 29 people die every day in drunk-driving crashes.
