Hockey India recently announced an exciting tour for the Indian women’s hockey team. From May 21 to June 3, the team will head to Australia to prepare for the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup in New Zealand, scheduled for June 15-21 in Auckland.
During their time in Australia, the team will play four matches against the Australian team at the Perth Hockey Stadium. The matches are set for May 26, 27, 29, and 30.
After the Australia tour, they will travel to New Zealand for more practice matches ahead of the Nations Cup. This is a crucial phase for the team, especially after their strong performance in Argentina earlier this year, where they secured two wins out of four matches. Since returning, they’ve been training hard at the national camp in Bengaluru, focusing on improving key skills.
To further enhance their game, the team will also participate in a specialized drag-flick training clinic led by Dutch legend Taeke Taekema. This training will take place in both Perth and Auckland from May 26 to June 21.
Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed his excitement about the tour. He highlighted its importance for identifying strengths and weaknesses. “These matches will show us how close we are to our best performance,” he said. He also noted that breaking up travel between Australia and New Zealand would help players acclimatize better to the upcoming weather changes.
In recent years, women’s hockey has been gaining visibility globally. Data from the International Hockey Federation indicated a 30% increase in viewership for women’s tournaments since 2020. This growing interest underscores the importance of such tours, offering teams invaluable experience and exposure.
Overall, this tour not only prepares the Indian women’s hockey team for their upcoming challenges but also contributes to the increasing support for women’s sports on a global scale.
