Alberto Mendoza, a former quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers, is set to transfer to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He’s not just any player; he’s the younger brother of Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy winner.
Mendoza grew up in Miami, Florida, where he played high school football at Christopher Columbus. He was recognized as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2024. Out of several schools vying for his talent, he chose Indiana over the likes of FIU, UAB, and App State.
In his first year at Indiana, Alberto played in only one game, allowing him to keep his redshirt and another year of eligibility. The following season saw his brother, Fernando, transfer to Indiana and become the starting quarterback. This shifted Alberto to a backup role as they aimed for a national title.
In 2025, Mendoza appeared in nine games, primarily as a backup. During this time, he completed 18 of 24 passes for a total of 286 yards and five touchdowns, alongside an interception. He also contributed on the ground with 190 rushing yards and one touchdown.
With the addition of veteran quarterback Josh Hoover through the Transfer Portal, Alberto decided it was time for a change and set his sights on Georgia Tech.
Last season, Georgia Tech finished with a 9-4 record, though they faced disappointment in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, concluding the season with three straight losses. Quarterback Haynes King, a dual-threat standout, has exhausted his eligibility, leaving a gap for Alberto to fill. Head coach Brent Key is actively using the Transfer Portal to rebuild, welcoming 19 new players, with Mendoza being the first quarterback to join.
Interestingly, the Transfer Portal closed on January 16, but teams like Indiana—whose seasons ended later—can still bring in new players during a unique window. There won’t be a Spring window this year, which makes winter the key period for roster changes.
