Quarterback Fernando Mendoza from the University of Indiana has made history as the winner of the 2025 Heisman Memorial Trophy. The announcement came during a lively ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York on December 13.
Mendoza earned an impressive 2,362 points, including 643 first-place votes. He outperformed Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, who finished second with 1,435 points. Rounding out the top spots were Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin.
At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, Mendoza is Indiana’s first Heisman winner, a testament to his hard work and talent. Previously, Indiana’s best finish was runner-up Anthony Thompson back in 1989. Mendoza’s season has been stellar. This redshirt junior, who transferred from California, led the Hoosiers to a perfect 13-0 record and secured a Big Ten Championship against Ohio State.
His numbers tell the story: Mendoza completed 226 of 316 passes for 2,980 yards and a nation-leading 33 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 240 yards and six scores. With a passer rating of 181.39, he ranks among the top 10 for Heisman winners in that category. His achievement marks a significant shift in college football, as he is the seventh player in nine years to claim the Heisman after transferring.
Interestingly, Mendoza isn’t the only standout in this year’s race. Pavia, finishing second, is now Vanderbilt’s highest finisher ever, highlighting the program’s growth. Love from Notre Dame achieved the best finish for his school since Manti Te’o in 2012. Sayin’s fourth-place finish is the top result for Ohio State since 2023.
The popularity and impact of the Heisman Trophy remain substantial, as reflected in the 2025 voting process. Ballots were cast by 930 electors, including media members and former winners, showing the level of engagement in college football.
