India is set to revise its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) up to 2035 and will present its first Biennial Transparency Report by December this year. These NDCs lay out how the country plans to cut emissions, adapt to climate change, and transition its economy under the Paris Agreement.
At the COP climate summit in Belem, Brazil, Bhupender Yadav, India’s Minister of Environment, emphasized these ambitions. It’s a strong signal of India’s commitment to tackling climate change.
Under its previous NDCs from 2022, India set ambitious targets. The country aims to reduce emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. Another key goal is for 50% of its installed electricity capacity to come from non-fossil sources by the same year, including renewables and nuclear energy. Additionally, India is working on boosting its carbon sinks through extensive tree planting and forest cover enhancement.
Yadav noted significant progress. Since 2005, India has cut its emissions intensity by over 36%. The country’s non-fossil energy capacity stands at around 256 GW, surpassing half of its total power capacity—this was achieved five years ahead of schedule.
The Biennial Transparency Report is a crucial document for countries in the Paris Agreement. It details each nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, climate impacts, and adaptation measures. It also includes information on financial and technological support for climate initiatives.
India’s upcoming NDCs through 2035 reflect a commitment to long-term climate action, aligning with its goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. However, there were delays in submitting these goals at COP30, raising questions about India’s climate strategy.
In a recent global survey, 63% of respondents expressed concern over the pace of climate action by major emitters, including India. This highlights a growing demand for transparency and accountability in climate commitments worldwide.
By presenting its climate goals and transparency report, India aims to rebuild trust and showcase its dedication to sustainable practices. This will not only address concerns about its climate action but also encourage collective global efforts in tackling environmental challenges.
