On June 26, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated a big step in maritime security with the introduction of ‘Adamya,’ the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) from its 08 FPV Project. Built entirely by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), this vessel showcases India’s growing shipbuilding capabilities and supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims for greater self-reliance.
‘Adamya’ boasts over 60% indigenous content, highlighting the success of the ‘Make in India’ movement in defense. Notably, it is the first ship in the ICG fleet equipped with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPPs) and locally developed gearboxes. These features provide better maneuverability and performance at sea.
This vessel is armed with advanced technology, including a 30mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7mm remote-control guns, making it a powerful tool for the ICG. It includes Integrated Bridge and Platform Management Systems, which enhance the Coast Guard’s effectiveness in their extensive maritime operations.
Fast Patrol Vessels like ‘Adamya’ serve as critical assets for quick responses to maritime law enforcement, coastal surveillance, and search and rescue. They play a vital role in protecting India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
This launch comes on the heels of recent advancements in India’s naval capabilities. On June 16, ‘Achal,’ another FPV, was launched, continuing the series of eight vessels being built for the ICG. Both vessels are certified with stringent standards, ensuring high quality and safety.
As maritime threats grow worldwide, India’s focus on enhancing its naval strength is more crucial than ever. Experts suggest that a strong coast guard is essential for national security, especially as maritime trade and environmental challenges increase. With advancements like ‘Adamya,’ India is taking active steps toward bolstering its maritime defenses.
The induction of such vessels not only boosts coastal security but also signifies India’s march towards technological advancement in shipbuilding. This trend is reflected in recent surveys indicating an increasing public confidence in indigenous defense production capabilities.
