India’s Role in Global Innovation and Sustainability
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently emphasized India’s commitment to addressing both local needs and global challenges. Speaking at the ‘Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit’ at IIT Bombay, he expressed confidence that India will play a crucial role in supporting emerging economies and low-income countries.
Pradhan noted, “I believe India can meet its own needs while also providing solutions for global issues.” He highlighted the importance of deep technology in connecting Indian innovations to the Global South. This summit, which featured 137 startups selected from over 3,000 applications, aims to represent India’s tech ecosystem at the upcoming Bharat Innovates 2026 event in France.
As India focuses on sustainability—especially in agriculture, healthcare, and energy—Pradhan believes the country can leverage deep-tech advancements to assist developing nations. He remarked, “Bharat Innovates will grow into a public movement, bringing together leaders from various sectors.”
Remarkably, he predicts that in ten years, India could lead in the energy sector. “We could transform our 600 million metric tonnes of biomass into energy, paving the way for India to become a net energy exporter,” he said. Despite challenges in hydrogen energy, he is optimistic about India’s potential leadership in that field as well.
By 2047, Pradhan urged a shift into a developed economy and strived for India to excel in at least 1,000 technologies. He pointed out that many countries in the Global South may find expensive technologies from the West unattainable. In contrast, India’s affordable tech provides a viable solution.
India has made strides in digital transactions, affordable healthcare, and generic medicines. These innovations showcase the country’s capabilities. However, Pradhan stressed, “More work is needed to ensure that technology serves public interests.”
The event also promoted connections among startups, venture capital firms, and industry leaders, which are essential for enabling commercial success and global expansion. As India positions itself as a leader in tech and sustainability, its innovations might not only transform its economy but also offer affordable solutions globally.
