India’s Data Centre Capacity to Soar 77% by 2027, Says JLL Report

New Delhi, April 2025 — India’s data centre industry is entering a major growth phase, with total capacity expected to reach 1.8 GW by 2027, marking a 77% surge, according to a report by JLL Research. This expansion highlights India’s rising stature as a key global data infrastructure hub amid booming demand for digital services.

📈 Rapid Growth Driven by Digital Adoption

The explosion in cloud services, video streaming, online banking, e-commerce, and social media usage has created an urgent need for more data centre space. JLL estimates that India will need to add around 9.3 million sq. ft. of data centre area to support an additional 795 MW of capacity over the next three years.

This expansion is being driven by surging data usage. According to Nokia’s Mobile Broadband Index (MbiT) report, the average Indian consumes 27.5 GB of data per month as of 2024 — a number expected to rise to 50 GB by 2030. This boom in usage makes scalable and robust data infrastructure a national priority.

🌍 City-wise Capacity: Mumbai Leads, Chennai & Delhi Rising

  • Mumbai tops the charts with 536 MW of colocation capacity, cementing its position as India’s data centre capital.
  • Chennai follows with 113 MW, backed by 8 submarine cable landing stations, attracting tech and financial firms.
  • Delhi-NCR is not far behind, with 112 MW across 15 active sites, powered by growing demand from cloud service providers and the IndiaAI mission.

These cities are becoming digital backbones for enterprise, cloud, and AI services in India.

🏛️ Government Policy Boosts Expansion

Government support is a major catalyst. The granting of infrastructure status to data centres, along with state-specific incentives and policies, is making it easier for private developers to invest and grow.

In 2024, the Centre approved the ₹10,300 crore IndiaAI Mission, aimed at building high-performance computing infrastructure and AI-focused GPU clusters—critical to next-gen data centres and digital transformation efforts.
