India’s Growing Defense Exports
India is transitioning from a defense buyer to a seller. Recently, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh mentioned that in 25 to 30 years, India could become one of the largest arms exporters globally. In the fiscal year 2024-25, India’s defense exports hit a record ₹23,622 crore, and by April 2026, they surged to ₹38,424 crore.
Local Production Boosts Exports
A key factor in this growth is India’s push for local manufacturing under initiatives like “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India.” Singh noted that Indian defense products are now on the market in about 100 countries. Updates from 2025 highlight India’s widespread export orders and global supply networks.
Export Destinations
Indian defense products are heading to various nations, with the USA, France, and Armenia listed as top destinations in 2023-24. By FY 2024-25, Indian defense items were exported to around 80 countries, with an increase in FY 2025-26. Notable deals include a contract with the Philippines for the BrahMos missile system and recent orders of guided Pinaka rockets for Armenia, showcasing India’s rising profile in the international defense arena.
Wider Range of Products
India isn’t just selling one type of weapon; the exports range from ammunition to entire systems and parts. Reports indicate a growing number of exporters, pointing to a healthy competition in India’s defense sector. The development of homegrown products like BrahMos, HAL Tejas, and Akash is a testament to India’s commitment to increasing its defense capabilities.
Future Outlook
While India still has a way to go before it hits the top of the global arms export ladder, the growth trend is encouraging. With an expanding domestic manufacturing base and a diverse range of products, India’s defense industry is setting itself up for a brighter future in international markets.
