India’s Defence Upgrade: Plans Unveiled for 200 Modern Light Helicopters to Replace Aging Chetak and Cheetah Models

The Indian army is gearing up to replace its older Chetak and Cheetah helicopters with 200 modern light helicopters. This move comes as part of the country’s effort to enhance its aerial capabilities.

Recently, the Ministry of Defence issued a request for information (RFI) outlining the need for these new helicopters, which will be split between the army and the Air Force. Specifically, 120 will be used by the army, and 80 will serve the Air Force.

These helicopters are designed for various roles like reconnaissance, surveillance, and search-and-rescue missions. They will be capable of operating day and night and can transport troops and equipment for special operations.

The focus is on boosting local manufacturing under the Aatmnirbhar Bharat initiative, encouraging Indian companies to partner with original equipment manufacturers. This strategy aims to strengthen India’s defense production and reduce reliance on imports.

According to a report presented in Parliament this March, the Indian Air Force is actively pursuing domestic production for various aircraft types, including fighters and helicopters. They have plans to acquire additional utility helicopters and advanced combat aircraft.

Historically, the Chetak and Cheetah helicopters have been in service since the 1960s. Unfortunately, they’ve faced criticism due to safety concerns, with several accidents leading to the loss of lives.

In addition to the new helicopters, the Indian government has approved purchasing 156 light combat helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for over ₹45,000 crore, aimed at improving security along the borders with China and Pakistan.

As India faces increasing pressure in the region, this modernization effort is crucial. Recent statistics show that helicopter capabilities are essential for quick response tasks and missions in challenging terrains, further emphasizing the need for this upgrade.
