India’s First Private Marine Gas Turbine Facility: Bharat Forge Partners with Andhra Pradesh Government in Visakhapatnam

Bharat Forge Limited recently announced an exciting partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create India’s first private Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) Repair and Overhaul complex in Visakhapatnam. This move aims to boost defense manufacturing in India and reduce reliance on foreign technologies.

The facility, built on around 80 acres in the Defence Manufacturing Corridor, is located near the Naval Dockyard and Eastern Naval Command. This location is significant as it will be the first time India has a private sector capable of handling gas turbine repairs.

The project will unfold in two phases. The first phase will bring a full Marine Gas Turbine Repair and Overhaul complex to life. This includes restoring vital components like blades and combustion liners with a quick 72-hour turnaround for repairs.

In phase two, Bharat Forge plans to establish a Development and Assembly Hall. This will allow them to not only test marine turbines but also develop indigenous ones for the first time.

According to Mr. Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman of Bharat Forge, this project represents a crucial step toward India’s self-sufficiency in defense. He emphasizes that the Indian Navy has historically relied on foreign-engineered solutions, but this initiative will change that.

The facility aims to create around 750 direct and indirect jobs, further supporting the local economy and contributing to national security. With naval operations under threat from disrupted overseas supply chains, this move will help enhance the Indian Navy’s operational readiness.

Experts say this investment is essential. A report from the Ministry of Defence notes that self-reliance is critical for India, especially as global defense dynamics shift.

This development marks a pivotal moment for Andhra Pradesh, positioning it as a leader in defense manufacturing. With ongoing investments, the state aims to become a hub of innovation and industrial growth, aligning with India’s broader goals for a resilient future.

As India enters a new era, projects like these could redefine its defense landscape, ensuring the country’s military capabilities are both robust and self-sustaining.
