India’s Game-Changer: Unveiling Six State-of-the-Art Submarines Under Project 75

The Indian government has greenlit the development of six advanced submarines, teaming up with German naval companies under Project 75. This project aims to enhance India’s submarine fleet and strengthen its defense manufacturing. Defense Ministry officials say that discussions between Mazagaon Dockyards Ltd., a state-owned company, and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems will begin soon, with contract finalizations expected in six months.

This submarines project is valued at ₹70,000 crores. The new submarines will feature Air Independent Propulsion Systems (AIP), allowing them to stay submerged for up to three weeks. The Navy plans to replace around ten aging submarines in the next decade. This new partnership aims to introduce updated technology alongside these replacements.

As for nuclear capabilities, India currently has two operational nuclear ballistic submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighat. Plans are also underway to develop more nuclear submarines, which provide greater operational efficiency and extended submersion time.
