India’s Journey to Develop a Cutting-Edge Fifth Generation Stealth Fighter Aircraft

Hyderabad: Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh greenlit the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. This fifth-generation stealth fighter jet aims to elevate India’s Air Force into a league of elite nations.

The AMCA has roots in the early 2000s when India realized the need for advanced aircraft to maintain its air superiority. The Indian Air Force faced challenges with aging jets like the MiG-21 and Mirage 2000 and sought a fighter that could compete with rising global powers.

India’s neighbors pose significant challenges. With two nuclear-armed adversaries—China and Pakistan—India’s need for advanced fighter jets is pressing. China plans to ramp up production of its J-20 stealth jets, potentially reaching 1,000 by 2030, just as the AMCA is set for its maiden flight. Meanwhile, Pakistan is exploring its fifth-generation options, aligning with China for the J-35A and collaborating on other projects.

The Indian Air Force currently operates only 31 squadrons, well below the desired strength of 42. The gradual withdrawal of older MiG-21s compounds this gap, making the AMCA project even more crucial.

Globally, the United States leads on the fifth-generation front with jets like the F-35 and F-22. Their advanced capabilities set a high bar. Russia’s Su-57, known for its stealth and versatility, is also making strides, while China’s J-20 has been operational since 2017 but isn’t considered as advanced by some analysts.

Other nations are also making advancements. South Korea is developing the KAI KF-21, aimed at enhancing its air force. Turkey’s TAI is actively working on the Kaan fighter, expected to enter service in 2030. Meanwhile, the UK, Japan, and Italy have teamed up for a sixth-generation fighter program, marking a significant collaboration in military aviation.
