In a significant move toward global engagement, 130 lawmakers from 24 Indian states joined the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Summit in Boston. This event, held from August 4 to 6, was the largest-ever delegation from India, showcasing a diverse group representing 21 political parties.
Delegates participated in sessions covering topics like healthcare, artificial intelligence in governance, climate change, economic growth, women’s empowerment, and transportation. They had the chance to share ideas and learn from other legislators and experts from around the world.
A highlight was the tour of the Massachusetts State House, offering insight into local legislative processes. The delegation also visited Harvard University and MIT, where they engaged with scholars about using research to inform policy decisions.
Dr. Rahul V. Karad, founder of NLC Bharat, emphasized the importance of the summit. He noted that it represents a shift in how Indian legislators interact globally, fostering a spirit of learning rather than competition. “We’re preparing our lawmakers to lead with knowledge and global awareness,” he said.
Additionally, the Indian delegation celebrated the 50th anniversary of the NCSL, meeting U.S.-based academic and policy experts of Indian origin. This dialogue focused on the modern challenges of governance, highlighting the need for legislators to adapt in the 21st century.
The NLC Bharat initiative aims to build stronger democratic practices in India. In 2024, it successfully brought together 50 state legislators to the NCSL in Louisville, Kentucky. This has set a precedent for collaborative learning and sharing best practices in governance.
As the world rapidly changes, forums like NCSL are crucial. They provide a platform for lawmakers to connect, learn, and innovate—essential for effective governance today.
