India’s Navy to Welcome 80% Indigenous ‘Ikshak’ Survey Vessel: A Milestone in Made-in-India Innovation!

The Indian Navy is boosting its surveying capabilities with the commissioning of the vessel Ikshak. This ship, named after the Sanskrit word for “Guide,” will be formally inducted into service on November 6 at the Naval Base in Kochi, where Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi will be present.

Ikshak is the third vessel in the Survey Vessel (Large) class and marks significant progress in India’s push for self-reliance, known as the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, it features over 80% indigenous components, thanks to collaboration with local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The vessel is designed for detailed hydrographic surveys of coastal areas and deep waters. Its primary aim is to gather crucial data for safe navigation, which is vital for maritime safety in India.

Ikshak is equipped with advanced technology, including a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). It also comes with four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs) and a helicopter deck, making it versatile for various missions.

This commissioning is a significant milestone in the Navy’s ongoing modernization efforts.
