India dreams of becoming a developed nation, but to get there, it needs to boost its manufacturing quality and support its Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This message was highlighted recently by BVR Subrahmanyam, the CEO of NITI Aayog, during an event hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi.
To transform into a strong economic player, India must improve not just the size of its economy but also the quality and technological capabilities of its businesses, especially MSMEs. These enterprises are vital to India’s industrial landscape, representing the second-largest MSME sector globally. They contribute around 30% to India’s GDP, accounting for nearly half of the country’s exports and employing over 110 million people.
However, MSMEs face significant challenges that hinder their growth. Subrahmanyam pointed out that while larger companies often have the resources to navigate hurdles, MSMEs struggle with limited access to technology and skilled labor. He emphasized that supporting these businesses as they grow can help transition them into larger enterprises.
Challenges Facing MSMEs
Despite their potential, MSMEs in India grapple with key issues:
- Technology Upgradation: Many still use outdated methods and can’t afford to invest in modern technology.
- Skilled Workforce: There is a notable skills gap, even with India’s strong educational system producing many STEM graduates.
- Quality Certifications: Meeting international quality standards is often a barrier that keeps these businesses out of global supply chains.
Without addressing these issues, India’s vision of becoming a developed nation remains distant.
Digital Transformation: The Path Forward
To tackle these challenges, the government has initiated the ‘Digital Excellence for Growth and Enterprise’ (Dx-EDGE), aimed at digitally empowering MSMEs. Launched during the CII event, Dx-EDGE is designed to provide MSMEs with the tools and knowledge they need to stay competitive. It focuses on:
- Enhancing digital and business skills.
- Making technology affordable.
- Fostering collaboration between MSMEs, academic institutions, and tech providers.
- Helping integrate MSMEs into global supply chains.
Digital transformation is seen as crucial for MSME survival in a global market. SCL Das, Secretary of the Ministry of MSMEs, highlighted that embracing technology is now essential for growth. Experts suggest that investments in digital tools can increase productivity and resilience among these businesses.
The Importance of Skilled Labor
As more young people enter the workforce, job creation will be vital. Dr. TG Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE, emphasized that India’s strong foundation in STEM can help bridge the skills gap in the MSME sector. If skilled labor can be effectively channeled, it provides immense potential for MSMEs to flourish.
Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of CII, reiterated the importance of supporting MSMEs to ensure they stay competitive amid fast-changing global dynamics.
With initiatives like Dx-EDGE and focused efforts on regulatory reforms and skill development, India is making strides toward empowering its MSMEs. But real progress will depend on ongoing government support, business participation, and robust policy execution.
The road ahead is tough, but with the right strategies, India can make its dream of a developed nation a reality. The success of its MSMEs will reflect the country’s growth, and with initiatives such as Dx-EDGE, there is hope for a brighter future.
