India’s Rising Role in Global Space and Aviation: Key Insights from PM Modi at the World Air Transport Summit

New Delhi recently hosted the World Air Transport Summit, marking a significant event after 40 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took this opportunity to highlight India’s growing leadership in aviation and space.

He pointed out that India is making strides in both air travel and the emerging field of inter-space travel. With a large, youthful population, India is positioned for innovative growth, especially in technology like artificial intelligence.

Domestically, India ranks as the third-largest aviation market. By 2030, the number of fliers is expected to soar to 500 million. Modi noted substantial investments in airport infrastructure, with operational airports increasing from 24 in 2014 to 162 today. Additionally, Indian airlines have placed orders for over 2,000 new aircraft, underscoring a significant expansion in the sector.

The Prime Minister emphasized that India’s aviation industry is on the brink of a major transformation. This shift includes advancements towards sustainability and green travel. India is not just looking to increase the number of flights but aims to set new global standards for user experience, safety, and efficiency.

Modi also introduced the Digi Yatra app, designed to enhance the passenger experience. He encouraged international delegates to explore its potential as a model for emerging economies.

Key reforms have fueled this rapid growth. The latest budget introduced initiatives like Mission Manufacturing, and legislation aiming to make India more attractive to global aircraft leasing companies was presented in Parliament. The upcoming Indian Aviation Bill, set for 2024, aims to align domestic regulations with global best practices.

India’s aviation sector is also breaking barriers in diversity. Approximately 15% of Indian pilots are women, which is three times higher than the global average. In cabin crew, women represent 86%, compared to the global average of 70%. Furthermore, India’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector is seeing a rising number of women, surpassing global trends.

These advancements underline how India’s aviation industry is evolving rapidly, balancing growth with sustainability while promoting inclusivity, showcasing a model that could inspire other countries.
