India’s Role in Nepali Citizen’s Travel to Berlin: Clarifying the MHA’s Statement

New Delhi: Indian immigration officials clarified that they played no part in stopping a Nepali citizen, Shambhavi Adhikari, from traveling to Berlin. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated it was the airline that prevented her from boarding due to visa issues.

Adhikari arrived at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on an Air India flight from Kathmandu. While attempting to board a connecting Qatar Airways flight to Berlin, she was stopped. The airline decided she couldn’t travel based on her visa validity, and she was sent back to Kathmandu.

According to the MHA, this situation has been misinterpreted as discrimination against Nepali citizens. They emphasized that Indian immigration authorities were not involved in this decision at all. They reassured that India values its relationship with Nepal and holds no bias against its citizens.

This incident highlights the importance of understanding international travel regulations. Sometimes, the rules of the destination country can affect a passenger’s journey. After rescheduling, Adhikari eventually reached Berlin via another route from Kathmandu.

Such cases underline a significant fact: international transit passengers don’t generally need to interact with Indian immigration. It’s primarily between the airlines and the traveler. This may come as a surprise, especially for those unfamiliar with transit protocols.

According to a recent survey conducted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 46% of travelers often misunderstand visa requirements, which can lead to similar travel disruptions. Awareness and clear communication by airlines can help prevent these situations. Additionally, social media reactions often reflect travelers’ frustrations, with many sharing their travel experiences and expressing concerns over visa complexities during transit.

In conclusion, while the incident with Shambhavi Adhikari appears unfortunate, it is essential to comprehend the role of airlines and visa regulations in international travel. Clarity in these matters can aid in smoother journeys for everyone involved.
