Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently celebrated Ahmedabad being chosen as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, calling it a proud moment for all Indians. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized the significance of this event, stating it will boost Gujarat’s status as India’s sports capital. He described it as an “unparalleled moment of pride” that aligns with the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” or developed India.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandaviya added that the Games will showcase India’s growth and commitment to sports as a driver for national development. He highlighted that hosting the Games would enhance India’s ability to conduct sustainable and inclusive global sports events.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi referred to the announcement as a “historic honor,” assuring the world that Gujarat is equipped with world-class facilities and the legendary Indian hospitality. He reiterated that the Games will embody Gujarat’s values of unity, sustainability, and excellence.
This 2030 edition is particularly special as it marks 100 years of the Commonwealth Games. According to PT Usha, the president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, hosting this centennial event will strengthen connections among Commonwealth nations. Donald Rukare, interim president of Commonwealth Sport, described Ahmedabad’s selection as a “defining moment,” emphasizing India’s readiness for a forward-thinking Games.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will serve as the main venue, highlighting one of Asia’s biggest multi-sport complexes. The event aims to set new standards for sustainability, featuring renewable energy sources, low-emission transport, and a commitment to zero waste. There will also be a focus on para-sports, reinforcing inclusivity.
These developments align with India’s National Sports Policy 2025 and the National Sports Governance Act 2025, which aim to enhance transparency and athlete welfare. The bidding process began in January 2025, involving high-level evaluations and on-site assessments, showcasing coordinated efforts from local and national government bodies.
