Bhuvaneshwar: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team scored a thrilling 1-0 victory over Germany at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. Deepika shone brightly, netting the only goal of the match in the 12th minute, which helped India secure the seventh spot on the points table.
The match kicked off with India showcasing strong defense and aggressive pressing. They matched Germany’s early ball control with their own attacking efforts. The turning point came when India was awarded a penalty corner. Deepika seized the opportunity, launching her shot into the net and putting India ahead. Shortly after, Vaishnavi Phalke almost set up Sunelita Toppo for a goal, but the attempt didn’t connect.
The second quarter was packed with action. India was determined to extend their lead, maintaining pressure on Germany. For the first five minutes, Germany struggled to break free, with Sophia Schwabe tightly guarded by the Indian defense. Deepika continued her impressive play, making a skillful run into the circle and passing to Sharmila Devi. Unfortunately, Sharmila’s shot was saved by German goalkeeper Finja Starck.
Germany fought back with a penalty corner in the 26th minute, but India’s goalkeeper Savita Punia was quick to react, blocking Lena Micheel’s attempt and preserving the lead at 1-0.
After halftime, India quickly earned another penalty corner thanks to Navneet Kaur. Deepika once again stepped up, striking the ball fiercely, but the German defense stood strong and kept the score the same.
Control of the game shifted, with Germany gaining possession in the third quarter. They had a hard time creating scoring opportunities, even after earning two penalty corners in the 38th minute. However, India’s defense stayed solid, and the score remained unchanged.
In the final quarter, India held their ground. When Germany was awarded an early penalty corner, Stine Kurz’s shot was bravely blocked by Sunelita Toppo. In the 47th minute, Schwabe unleashed a powerful shot from close range, but goalkeeper Bichu Devi was ready, making two quick saves to deny Germany any chance of equalizing.
As the match neared its end, Germany tried to break through the Indian defense with a series of passes, but they couldn’t find the net. India’s solid play ensured they walked away with a well-deserved win.
