Indie Developer Claims Zenless Zone Zero Mirrors His Game Ouros: ‘It’s Virtually Identical’ – Kotaku Exclusive

Hoyoverse, known for hits like Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero, is facing accusations of copying from indie developers. Recently, game designer Michal Kamm released a video on Bluesky, claiming that a minigame in Zenless Zone Zero closely resembles his own game, Ouros.

In the video, Kamm outlines how both games involve manipulating a track to hit numbered targets. The way players create unique shapes in Ouros mirrors gameplay in Zenless Zone Zero, where similar mechanics are present. Kamm pointed out that this isn’t just about gameplay; the design elements also overlap. For instance, both games include portals that reset the track and hint systems guiding the player.

Kamm launched Ouros in 2024, while Zenless Zone Zero’s version was featured in a limited-time event last year. This isn’t the first time Hoyoverse has been accused of imitating indie developers. In a recent Reddit discussion, another indie game called Map Map – A Game About Maps alleged that a mini-game in Genshin Impact copied elements from their title, particularly involving a map marker dropping after selecting a point on the map.

It’s not uncommon for game mechanics to echo one another. However, the Zenless Zone Zero and Genshin Impact controversies are more intense due to the massive fan bases involved. Reactions from Hoyoverse fans vary widely, with some arguing that if the studios took inspiration from smaller games, it could benefit the lesser-known titles through increased visibility.

Kamm created his video to combat accusations that Ouros borrowed ideas from Zenless Zone Zero. He expressed frustration over being overshadowed by a larger studio and clarified his game’s originality.

Despite the controversy, Ouros has collected nearly 250 positive reviews on Steam, showing that players appreciate its unique offering. The discussion around these allegations highlights how challenging the gaming industry can be for indie developers trying to stand out.
