Indulge in Authentic Jammu & Kashmir Cuisine on Your Vande Bharat Journey!

Indian Railways, in partnership with IRCTC, has launched a delightful initiative on the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. Passengers can now enjoy authentic vegetarian dishes from Jammu and Kashmir during their travels.

The new menu includes popular items like Kehwa (a traditional tea), Rajma, Kashmiri Pulao, and fresh apples. Passengers arriving in Katra were greeted warmly and were quick to praise the local flavors and quality of the food.

IRCTC Chairman Harjot Singh Sandhu highlighted the aim of this initiative: to give travelers a taste of Kashmir Valley’s rich culinary heritage even before they reach their destination. This aligns with a broader trend in tourism where unique local experiences enhance the journey.

Uchit Singhal, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, shared that the menus feature state-of-the-art hygienic kitchens and improved packaging. Instead of aluminum foil, meals will now be served in airline-style Teflon-coated casseroles and eco-friendly coir trays.

Among the local delicacies are Ambal, a sweet and sour pumpkin dish, Babru, a stuffed puri, and Jammu Paratha for breakfast. Lunch options feature Paneer Chaman, Kashmiri Dum Aloo, and Jammu Rajma, prepared using traditional methods to ensure authentic flavors.

The Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6. This train connects Srinagar to India’s railway network, marking an important step in enhancing travel options in the region.

For those who may prefer standard fare, familiar vegetarian options like upma and poha will also be available alongside the regional specialties.

Research has shown that travelers are increasingly seeking authentic food experiences. In fact, a recent survey revealed that 79% of tourists believe local cuisine is key to enjoying a new destination. By offering regional dishes, Indian Railways is tapping into this trend, enhancing the travel experience while celebrating local culture.

In a world where food connects us, this initiative is a welcome step towards making train journeys more flavorful and memorable.
