Infosys Launches New Global Capability Center for Lufthansa in India: What This Means for the Future

BENGALURU: Infosys is planning to establish a global capability centre (GCC) for Lufthansa in India. This move is part of a nearly $300 million IT contract with the German airline. It highlights the trend of build-operate-transfer (BOT) as an essential element in major contract renewals.

This new tech hub will follow Delta Airlines’ tech centre launched in Bengaluru four years ago and American Airlines’ upcoming centre in Hyderabad. These developments showcase the increasing importance of aviation-focused tech centres in India.

Lufthansa Technik Services India (LTSI) has been operating since 2005 as a subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik. Based in Bengaluru, it employs over 300 staff who provide global component services for commercial aircraft. LTSI supports its clients with access to spare parts, repair facilities, engineering assistance, and customized logistics to ensure smooth aviation operations.

Infosys has experience in creating integrated manufacturing facilities for aerospace companies. One notable project involved monitoring devices across more than 500 machines across 11 facilities, improving operational efficiency through a wireless network and analytical tools.

Two years ago, Infosys partnered with Rolls-Royce to launch a joint aerospace engineering and digital innovation centre in Bengaluru, aimed at delivering advanced R&D and digital services. According to Oliver Wyman, the global maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market is expected to reach $118 billion by 2030, which is lower than the pre-Covid estimate of $135 billion.

Mrinal Rai from ISG notes that IT companies are now offering consulting, operational setup, and ongoing innovation, making GCCs a popular new service area. The main reasons organizations are shifting to GCC models include cost efficiency and access to skilled talent.

Bharath M from Everest Group emphasizes that the rise of the GCC model in airlines helps meet the industry’s demands for real-time support and agile operations. With major airlines establishing centres in India, the country is increasingly seen as a hub for global aviation innovation.
