Inside Delhi’s Lavish Wedding: 30,000 Guests, Rs 33 Crore Helicopter, and Extravagant Costs Revealed!

In 2011, Indian weddings took a turn for the extravagant when Lalit Tanwar married Yogita Jaunapuria. Their nuptials near Delhi amazed everyone, with costs rumored to be between ₹200 crore and ₹500 crore—an unmatched display of luxury, even among the elite.

The ceremony was held at the Tanwar family’s farmhouse in Asola, Fatehpur Beri, where approximately 2,000 guests joined in the pre-wedding rituals. Guests received lavish return gifts that included a 30-gram silver biscuit, a safari suit, and ₹2,100 in cash. The groom’s tika ceremony alone featured gifts totaling ₹2.5 crore, with family members also treated generously.

The main wedding in Jaunpur, Haryana, drew around 15,000 attendees. Each guest was gifted ₹11,000. The feast was extravagant, featuring over 100 dishes prepared by about 1,000 staff members. To ensure everyone could see the wedding rituals, the venue had 12 massive screens set up.

Later, the couple hosted a lavish reception at a five-star hotel in Delhi. Dignitaries like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and various Bollywood stars were in attendance, adding to the event’s grandeur.

One of the most talked-about gifts was a Bell 429 helicopter, valued at approximately ₹33 crore—an impressive token from the bride’s family to the groom. Lalit Tanwar brushed off the extravagance, calling it “a simple wedding.”

Adding to the festivities were live performances, including a performance by actress Neha Dhupia, which helped set the celebratory mood.

The estimates of the wedding’s total cost varied widely. While the Times of India suggested around ₹100 crore (about $22 million at the time), Mail Today speculated the expenses could reach up to ₹250 crore (around $55 million).

The couple hails from notable families in Indian politics. Lalit is the son of Kanwar Singh Tanwar, a BJP figure and District Panchayat President, while Yogita is the daughter of Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria, a former MLA.

Modern weddings often reflect societal changes. In recent years, many have called for a return to simpler celebrations amid rising costs. According to a 2023 survey by the Indian Wedding Association, over 60% of couples prefer smaller, intimate weddings. This shift signifies a desire for personal connection over ostentation.
