Just a day after a serious incident outside the Wake County Courthouse, discussions are rising about the safety of clients and attorneys. A woman, Gwendolyn White, allegedly shot two lawyers, Mary Harris and Jeffrey Whitley, as they left the courthouse. She now faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Seth Blum, an attorney, felt the impact of this shooting deeply. White was his former client, and he had noticed her mental health struggles during their time together. “She had called the police on her neighbors 37 times, convinced they were poisoning her,” Blum recalled. “There was no evidence to support her claims, but I could see she needed help.”
Fortunately, both attorneys are expected to recover from their non-life-threatening injuries. This incident highlights the risks legal professionals face regularly. Blum himself received a call indicating he was a possible target.
Several other attorneys shared their experiences with threats. Cheri Patrick from Durham stated, “I don’t work in the county where I live to stay safe.” In her office, they’ve set up panic buttons and even provide bear spray at the front desk.
Another lawyer, Andrew Fine, recalled serious threats he encountered while representing different clients. “It’s easy for people to see lawyers as the enemy, even if they’re just doing their job,” he said.
According to a recent survey by the American Bar Association, approximately 30% of lawyers reported receiving threats at some point in their careers. This statistic reveals just how common this issue is in the legal field.
Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman also acknowledged threats faced by her office. “Over the past few years, several of my assistants and judges have received threats,” she mentioned.
The trend of violence against legal professionals isn’t new. In 2018, a gunman fired shots into the Dysart Willis law offices in Raleigh. Just last year, Jesse Metcalf was convicted after threatening a prosecutor in Wake County.
As society continues to grapple with mental health issues, the need for proper support and safety measures for attorneys is more crucial than ever. Awareness and dialogue around these topics can help foster a safer environment for legal professionals and their clients alike.
