Inside Kohl’s Challenges: Insights from Business Experts and Customers on Recent Layoffs

Kohl’s has announced new layoffs, affecting about 400 employees, or roughly 10% of its corporate workforce. More than half of these cuts will involve positions that were already open, while the remainder will impact current staff.

Timothy Gibbons, editor of the Milwaukee Business Journal, acknowledged the emotional toll these layoffs can take. “For each individual affected, it’s a significant loss,” he said.

Many factors have contributed to Kohl’s recent struggles. Gibbons noted that the company has faced a string of disappointing sales quarters, making this iconic retailer’s situation quite difficult. “Kohl’s has seen better days. It’s a beloved brand in our community,” he added.

Megan Lee from TMJ4 spoke with shoppers outside a downtown Milwaukee Kohl’s store. One customer, Joshua Anthony, expressed regret about the store’s decline, saying, “It’s sad to see a Milwaukee staple struggle. It feels personal.” He compared Kohl’s to other cherished local brands, highlighting its significance to the community.

In addition to layoffs, Kohl’s is also set to shut down 27 stores across the nation that are not performing well. Gibbons pointed out that these changes will deeply affect the local community. “People are emotionally connected to Kohl’s. Losing jobs and stores is hard on the community,” he noted.

Kohl’s has promised that all affected employees have been informed and are receiving support in the form of severance packages to help with their transition.
