A strange argument broke out between the Liberals and Nationals during a NSW budget hearing about energy management. It was so chaotic that one member described the Coalition as “completely broken down.”
The trouble began when Nationals MLC Wes Fang and Liberal Jacqui Munro couldn’t decide who would question Energy Minister Penny Sharpe first. Both tried to speak at once just as the session began. Munro told Fang, “I’m your Coalition colleague,” emphasizing the confusion.
Within minutes, questioning about Origin Energy’s battery project was interrupted again by Fang. He claimed that the chair had allowed him to speak, leaving Munro confused. Fang quipped, “(NSW Liberal leader Mark) Speakman can’t keep a humble bloke from Wagga down,” signaling his frustration.
Calls from Labor members to restore order came quickly, with one stating, “It’s obvious that the Coalition’s completely broken down.” Indeed, both sides were clearly struggling to maintain decorum. Committee chair Sue Higginson noted that these issues should be resolved among them.
The situation highlighted broader tensions in the Coalition regarding energy policy. Recently, Liberal MP Wendy Tuckerman stepped down due to disagreements over a bill aimed at accelerating critical transmission infrastructure, a move that spurred division within the opposition.
During the questioning, Minister Sharpe emphasized the need for flexible energy solutions, saying, “We’re going to make sure that we’re constantly adjusting what we need.” In response, Munro made her stance clear: “You know my views on this very clearly.”
