Carolina is on fire! They just won their sixth straight game, overpowering Virginia Tech 91-59. This victory marks the team’s highest score in a road match in the ACC since 2019. They’ve been scoring a lot lately, averaging nearly 91 points per game in this winning streak.
The game turned around when Virginia Tech was leading 23-21 in the first half. Then, Carolina went on an incredible 48-12 run that showcased their best basketball of the season. Their strong defense, quick transitions, and precise shooting were on full display.
Speaking of shooting, Carolina was impressive again. They shot over 50% in both halves, hitting 58.9% from the field and 53.6% from three-point range. Their three-point shooting was especially noteworthy with 15 successful attempts out of 28, which is their best this season.
Several players contributed to this scoring surge. Ian Jackson led the team with 19 points, while Seth Trimble and RJ Davis added 15 each. Drake Powell scored 13 points, and Ven-Allen Lubin helped out with 10 points and 11 rebounds, marking his first double-double at UNC.
The positive momentum started when Carolina began forcing turnovers. Virginia Tech struggled to maintain possession and had eight turnovers within a short span, allowing Carolina to capitalize on fast-break opportunities. They led the fast-break points 11-2 in the first half.
Drake Powell was a force on defense, helping create those steals even when he wasn’t scoring much himself. He finished with a +30 plus/minus for the game, showcasing his impact beyond just points. Similarly, Elliot Cadeau tallied 12 assists, facilitating nearly half of the team’s first 30 baskets.
Carolina also had a solid rebounding game, dominating the boards 38-27. They’ve been doing well on the glass lately, boasting a +70 rebound margin over the past five games.
Looking ahead, the big game against Duke is on Saturday, along with ESPN’s College Gameday. The atmosphere at the Smith Center should be electric, as Carolina seeks to continue their impressive streak.
