Carolina put on quite a show, cruising to an impressive 87-74 victory over Kansas. The second half was especially thrilling. The Tar Heels scored efficiently, hitting 66.7% of their shots while netting 23 points in just 31 possessions. When they find their rhythm, they are hard to stop.
Caleb Wilson was a standout, wrapping up with 24 points and seven rebounds. Despite facing some challenges early on, he played smart and aggressive basketball, helping the team when they needed it most. Alongside him, Henri Veesaar contributed another 20 points, forming a powerful duo in the paint.
In the first half, turnovers were a big issue for Carolina. They gave up ten turnovers that led to 17 points for Kansas. Despite this, they stayed competitive, thanks to their relentless pursuit of loose balls. Each player contributed, but Wilson’s hustle really sparked the team.
The second half told a different story. Carolina cut down on turnovers, committing just one, which limited Kansas’s scoring chances. They only allowed two points off those turnovers in the final stretch, sealing the win and breaking Kansas’s impressive streak against the ACC.
Darryn Peterson scored 22 points for Kansas, but Carolina’s Seth Trimble managed to contain him effectively. Trimble’s tough defense allowed the team to focus on other strategies without worrying about switching off defenders.
An interesting aspect of this matchup was the number of international players on both teams. With three Tar Heels hailing from abroad and four from Kansas, it reflects how the college game is evolving. With more funding and exposure, international talent is becoming a prominent fixture in American college basketball.
This game marked only the third meeting between Carolina and Kansas in North Carolina. The history between these two programs is rich, highlighted by figures like Dean Smith, who played for Kansas and later became a legendary coach at UNC.
As for the game atmosphere, fans experienced improved audio thanks to new subwoofers, enhancing the overall experience in the arena. Plus, corporate logos now adorn the Smith Center floor, providing a new revenue stream for the program.
Next week, the Tar Heels are back at home for more games, including matchups against Radford and North Carolina Central. This is the first time they’ve opened a season with five consecutive home games since 1918-19—a nod to the strong support from their fans.
