Glynis A. Fitzgerald, Ph.D., just became the first female lay president of Alvernia University. With her new role, she also introduces her husband, David Rifkind, as the first gentleman of the university.

David is an experienced legal executive and a dedicated community volunteer. His commitment to service aligns perfectly with Alvernia’s mission. Together, they share a passion for education, the arts, and making a difference in their community.

Chat with David Rifkind

Q: How does it feel to add “first gentleman” to your life?

A: “Joining Glynis in this role has been rewarding and genuinely enjoyable. Participating in Alvernia’s mission—helping those in need and collaborating with local partners—is fulfilling. One of my favorite memories is our engagement day. We attended a concert and shared my proposal plans with the Bernardine Sisters. Their warmth and encouragement made it a special moment.”

Q: What’s your job, and how does it connect to Alvernia?

A: “I work at Caidya, a global organization focused on oncology research. It’s gratifying to help improve cancer treatment. I’m also excited about the Berks Biomedical Innovation Collaboration led by the O’Pake Institute. There’s a real opportunity in Berks County’s biomedical sector, and I’m thrilled to be involved.”

Q: Which Alvernia event are you looking forward to?

A: “This summer, we restored the bell at Cedar Hill Farms. We hope to create a tradition where first-year students ring the bell as they start their journey at Alvernia. Four years later, they’ll return to ring it again as graduates, celebrating their growth and the community that supported them. For Glynis, bells symbolize reflection and connection, and we’re excited to build this tradition together.”

David’s enthusiasm is infectious. He aims to foster connections that will leave a lasting impact. With both Glynis and David leading together, Alvernia is set to embark on a bright new chapter.
