On January 17, two new 16-car trainsets started running on the 972 km route between Guwahati and Howrah. These trains, built at the BEML plant in Bengaluru, offer a unique sleeper configuration aimed at long-distance travel. The journey takes about 14 hours, making it easier for passengers traveling between these two cities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the launch ceremony, highlighting its importance.
This sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train is designed for routes between 800 and 1,200 km. Unlike the standard version, it has one first-class car with 24 seats, four two-tier cars, and 11 three-tier cars—totaling a capacity of 823 passengers. The train’s maximum operational speed can reach 160 km/h, but initial operations will cap at 120-130 km/h.
In recent developments, BEML plans to deliver eight more trainsets by year-end, and two consortia are also gearing up to produce similar trains. This shift can be seen as a response to the growing demand for more efficient long-distance travel in India.
