The Indian Navy just welcomed ‘Anjadip’, the third vessel in a new line of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC). Built in Kolkata, this ship aims to enhance the Navy’s abilities in submarine detection, coastal surveillance, and mine-laying operations.
Anjadip gets its name from Anjadip Island near Karwar, Karnataka. This highlights India’s dedication to protecting its vast maritime territories. Measuring around 77 meters, Anjadip is the largest Indian naval warship powered by waterjets. It’s equipped with advanced technologies like Lightweight Torpedoes, homegrown Anti-Submarine Rockets, and sophisticated sonar systems. These features make it highly effective in spotting and intercepting underwater threats.
The development of these ships is a clear example of successful teamwork between public and private sectors in defense manufacturing. Notably, over 80% of Anjadip’s components are sourced locally. Just a month before Anjadip’s delivery, the Navy commissioned INS Mahe, the first of the Mahe-class vessels. This ceremony showcased collaboration among various arms of the Indian Armed Forces, reinforcing their commitment to a unified military approach.
