Melisa Mendez is making waves at Indiana University Bloomington. As a political science major, she also minors in international relations, American studies, and Spanish. Melisa, a Hutton Honors student, has consistently excelled in her studies. She’s been on the Executive Dean’s List every semester since 2022 and is part of honor societies like Phi Eta Sigma–Alpha Lambda Delta.
Melisa’s research interests focus on U.S.–Latin American relations, looking closely at how U.S. foreign policy impacts culture, economics, and politics. She’s also passionate about political polarization and its effect on democracy. Her ambition includes writing an honors thesis that adds valuable insights to political science, and she plans to pursue graduate studies after her undergraduate program.
On campus, she’s taken on leadership roles. She serves as President of the Forest Hutton Honors Council and Vice President of the Ambassador Division. She’s also set to be the next President of the 21st Century Leadership Corps. Being fluent in English and Spanish, Melisa aims to carve out a career that combines diplomacy, public service, and international policy.
According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, young leaders like Melisa are crucial in shaping future diplomatic strategies. Engaging with global issues, especially in this interconnected world, shows her commitment to making a real difference.
