After a couple of years, Microsoft has finally launched its Copilot AI assistant for macOS. You can download it for free from the Mac App Store right now.
Before this, there was a fleeting moment when an iPad version of Copilot could work on Macs, but that access was cut off quickly. Mac users had to rely on a web interface until now.
Copilot started on the web, then expanded to iOS and Android last year. Microsoft has since integrated it into various software products.
This new Copilot app is part of a trend that includes ChatGPT and Anthropic, which also offer apps for macOS. It allows users to easily start a chat with a simple keyboard shortcut, just like the others. You can translate and summarize text, answer questions, draft documents, tackle coding issues, brainstorm ideas, and more.
Copilot leverages advanced AI models from OpenAI, including GPT-4 and DALL-E 3, which helps it create images too. Microsoft has heavily invested in OpenAI to power Copilot and its entire AI strategy.
To use Copilot on macOS, you’ll need an M1 chip or newer, along with macOS 14 or higher.
