Northwestern has launched its first entertainment consulting club, StageStrat. This group is designed to give students hands-on experience where art meets business.
Co-presidents Diane Li and Maya Palacios, both communication sophomores, started StageStrat after realizing that existing clubs didn’t reflect their interests in the entertainment industry. “We didn’t find anything that excited us, like projects or clients we were passionate about,” Li shared.
Li and Palacios are studying theatre and economics. When Li arrived at Northwestern, she found it challenging to connect with others who shared her diverse passions. By founding StageStrat, she aims to create that community.
This quarter, the club will simulate meetings among its members to prepare for real consultations with entertainment businesses in the spring. Li envisions working with arts nonprofits, such as children’s theaters or dance studios, to help them with financial strategies.
“We wanted to combine business, entertainment, and storytelling,” Li explained.
The club held its first meeting at Annenberg Hall, and members will meet weekly to discuss their plans. Freshman Sophia Hernandez attended an information session and was enthusiastic about the hands-on experiences the club promises, stating, “It seems like a fascinating opportunity.”
StageStrat stands out from other business clubs at Northwestern due to its open-door policy. There’s no application process—anyone interested can join. Communication Professor Barbara Butts, the club’s advisor, emphasized the importance of inclusivity, saying, “Everyone should have a seat at the table.” This approach has been crucial in the club’s recognition as an official student group.
Li believes that this accessibility will help create a welcoming community. People who might usually be hesitant to join business-oriented clubs now have a space to explore their interests without the fear of rejection. “We want students to discover themselves,” Li stated, emphasizing the club’s supportive environment.
