Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu recently unveiled the ‘Climate Action Tracker for Tamil Nadu’ and ‘Climate Decarbonisation Pathways’ for districts like Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Coimbatore, and Nilgiris. This initiative aims to guide each district toward reducing carbon emissions.
With the help of the Vasudha Foundation and other government bodies, a thorough analysis of these districts has been completed. Mr. Thennarasu emphasized that the Tamil Nadu government is dedicated to building a strong and eco-friendly economy. He stated, “Climate action is not just a challenge; it is a path to economic success.”
One notable program, the Meendum Manjappai movement, promotes responsible consumption. Additionally, the Thooimai Mission is improving waste management across the state.
Financing these initiatives is crucial. Mr. Thennarasu mentioned that a blend of public and private investments, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and innovative funding tools like green bonds will support the transition.
Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary for Environmental Affairs, indicated that all stakeholders would have access to tracking tools to measure progress. Over the past five years, Tamil Nadu has added nearly 10 GW of renewable energy, making renewables account for 60% of the state’s total installed capacity.
Expert Montek Singh Ahluwalia noted that stricter emission regulations for large industries are on the horizon. He asserted that this is just the beginning, with the framework set to evolve.
Each district has various projects lined up. In Coimbatore, plans include electrifying 500 city buses and replacing 5 lakh streetlights with LED lights by 2030. The Nilgiris aims to become carbon-neutral while empowering local communities through eco-heritage projects and promoting clean energy.
In Ramanathapuram, initiatives focus on restoring mangroves and transitioning 900 fishing vessels to electric power. Meanwhile, Virudhunagar plans to enhance public transport and adopt clean energy solutions.
Recent trends on social media show increasing public support for these initiatives, highlighting a growing awareness of environmental issues. This reflects a unified community effort towards sustainability.
