FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University has introduced the Martin “Mike” Arcure Memorial Impact Scholarship to honor the late Mike Arcure. This annual scholarship, worth $1,000, supports full-time undergraduates from Marion County, West Virginia, who need financial assistance.
The scholarship was established by Mike’s wife, Beverly Arcure, and their four children. It aims to celebrate Mike’s lasting influence on the Fairmont community. Anne Bolyard, President of the Fairmont State University Foundation, shared insights about Mike’s dedication on WAJR’s “Talk of the Town.”
“His son noted that Mike always ensured student-athletes attended class. He’d check in with their professors and was there for them every Monday morning,” Bolyard explained. Many of these students saw Mike as a father figure, someone who committed to helping them earn their degrees.
Mike earned both his bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State University and a master’s from West Virginia University, focusing on education. He taught history and political science, also coaching high school basketball. Afterward, he returned to Fairmont State in 1968, contributing significantly to the physical education department and establishing the university’s first intramural sports program. He also volunteered as an assistant basketball coach and was active in recruiting.
Even after retiring, Mike remained deeply involved in the community, participating in local events and attending games well into his 80s, always donning Fairmont State gear.
“He led scholarship banquets and was proud of his connection to Fairmont State,” Bolyard added.
Mike Arcure passed away on September 12, 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy as an educator, coach, and community supporter.
