The Indian Railways is set to introduce a new 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train, aiming to provide more passenger capacity and upgraded amenities. This initiative, part of the Make in India campaign, will be overseen by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
Currently, this project is in the design phase. Officials expect a prototype to be ready by the end of 2026. This new model will enhance passenger comfort and service.
On January 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, linking Howrah and Guwahati. This marks a significant milestone in sleeper train travel, aiming for comfort and safety. Historically, the Rajdhani Express set high standards for long-distance travel since its introduction in 1969, and the new Vande Bharat trains aim to raise the bar even higher.
The upcoming 24-coach sleeper train will include 17 third AC, five second AC, and one first AC coach, accommodating up to 1,224 passengers—nearly 49% more than the current 16-coach version, which has capacity for 823. This offers significant improvement in passenger berths, providing more choices for travelers.
Beyond just numbers, the train will also feature modern touches like ergonomic berths, reading lights, and charging points. Promoting accessibility, it will have facilities for Divyangjan passengers, including ramps and accessible toilets.
Advanced safety features are part of the plan too. The train will include CCTV surveillance, energy-efficient systems, and the Kavach collision avoidance system. Its top speed will be 160 km/h, promising swift journeys across the country.
The pricing is also set to be competitive, with rates varying by class: Rs 2.4 per km for third AC, Rs 3.1 for second AC, and Rs 3.8 for first AC. Riders can expect a minimum fare starting at Rs 960 for short journeys up to 400 km.
This remodel brings together tradition and innovation, enhancing the travel experience for millions. According to a survey by the Railways, 78% of passengers expressed a desire for improved onboard services, making this upgrade timely and essential.
