SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A new refrigerated van is now part of the Unity Shoppe’s efforts to meet the rising demand for fresh food in Santa Barbara.
Angela Miller-Bevan, the Executive Director of Unity Shoppe, expressed excitement about the addition. “We now have three refrigerated vans. This new one, designed by Whole Foods, has added value to our fleet,” she noted.
The van is designed to showcase a range of fresh produce. Its colorful appearance catches the eye, serving as a reminder that fresh food is being collected and delivered regularly.
On a recent Wednesday, the team made a stop at Grocery Outlet, located just minutes from Unity Shoppe’s downtown site. At various stores, they often pick up surplus food or items bought with donated gift cards.
Kevin Easter, a Unity Shoppe team member, shared, “We typically gather staple items like pasta, canned vegetables, onions, and sometimes even ground beef. Around holidays, we gather more seasonal foods for special meals.”
The team usually heads out after the morning restock at the grocery stores, where items are set aside for easy pickup. “The stores prepare everything for us. Drivers load up the van and head straight to Unity Shoppe,” Easter added.
Once at Unity Shoppe, the food is unloaded quickly and made available for clients right away. This efficient process ensures food moves seamlessly from the stores to the community.
Miller-Bevan highlighted support from the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara, which has funded the addition of refrigerators and freezers. “This enhancement allows us to distribute more food to those in need,” she said.
One beneficiary, Tony Rogers, shared his appreciation. “The good quality and preservation of the food are a blessing for us. These resources help ensure that food doesn’t go to waste in our community.”
The introduction of this third van comes at a crucial time, as diverse demographics are increasingly seeking assistance. Miller-Bevan mentioned, “Clients can now save money on healthy food, allowing them to use those savings for rent, gas, or childcare.”
Recent data from local surveys show that food insecurity in Santa Barbara has increased. According to a report from the California Association of Food Banks, 1 in 7 residents in the state experience food insecurity, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the Unity Shoppe.
As community support continues to grow, the Unity Shoppe remains a vital resource for many, helping ensure that everyone has access to nutritious food.
